Michelle Whelan's PledgePage
Dear family and friends,
How does that saying go? The third time is a charm -right? Well, I hope so because I just started training for my third marathon. This time I am heading to Anchorage, Alaska to partake in the Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon on June 23, 2001 as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program. I did this program last year for the San Diego Rock n Roll Marathon and I had such a great experience I decided to do it again. But, I do need your help…don’t worry you don’t have to run 26.2 miles, but you can help with the fundraising. I have committed to raise $4000 to support research for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of the patients and their families. In exchange for my commitment, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society provides a comprehensive training program called Team in Training as well as transportation to and from the race site and hotel accommodations. My mom remains my inspiration for running another marathon. I am happy to share that we were blessed with great news this past week; my mom received another clean bill of health. She has now been in remission for 2 ½ years since her treatment of hairy cell leukemia. 2 ½ more years to go and she will be considered “cured”! That will be a day worth celebrating…. Perhaps I will run another marathon that day to honor her! The strength and love that my mom has given me, provides me with much hope and motivation to conquer the challenges that lie ahead! The 26.2 miles that I will endure will be nothing compared to what she has gone through. The good news is my mom is winning her battle! The sad news is that there are millions of children and adults who are still fighting their battles. As an employee of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society I have seen the devastating effects blood related cancers have on children, adults and their families. This has been a very rewarding, challenging and emotional job as well as an eye opener. “Every five minutes, someone in the United States learns that they have leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma — nearly 300 people a day.” “Every nine minutes, another child or adult dies from leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma.” These statistics from the Society make me realize now, more than ever how important the funds we raise are. That is why we must continue to fight for a cure. With your support I hope to give someone with leukemia, lymphoma or other blood related cancer the same sense of triumph and joy that I will feel when I cross the finish line. Your contribution of $200, $100, $50, or $26.20 (a buck a mile!) is one step closer to a cure. Every donation, regardless of size is important AND GREATLY APPRECIATED! If you wish to make a donation please click on the link to the left of the screen. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. Please support me in my goal to raise funds, and train alongside thousands of other "Team in Training" volunteers. With your help, together we can make a difference! Miles of smiles Michelle Whelan |
